On cloudless mornings the sun rises over Dublin Bay, brilliantly illuminating the skies. Today I thought I would share some photos I took this summer, as Dublin slowly came to life, together with my poem, Dublin Sunrise. Hope you enjoy these words and images.
An immense dark sky
Flushes in expectation,
Casting a glowing sheen
Across shimmering waves.
Branches glisten
With gleaming dewdrops.
Supporting an orchestra
Of chirping birds.
Shades of crimson deepen,
Streaking the sky,
Pulsating with knowledge
Of this day’s dawning.
Over Howth hill’s darkened rim
The sun rises,
Announcing its arrival
In radiating fiery stripes.
And as the sun continues
Its astral climb,
Dublin simply
Goes about its business.

Loved your poem and pictures, Mairead. Reminded me of coming in to Ireland from the US having traveled all night across the sea, when the first shafts of Dawn are on the horizon, and slowly develop into that splendid golden morning glow across the water and Dublin Bay. I watch for it on each trip!
I believe the street lights in Dublin are orange because they can be seen better in the fog.
Maureen – I too love arriving in Ireland at the crack of dawn – there is something magical about landing on a bright, golden morning in Dublin.
Thanks for your explanation of orange street lamps – there sure is plenty of fog in Ireland to warrant those orange lights.
All the best,
Mairéad
I love this poem and I love the photos.
One thing, the streetlights that you captured in the photos bring back fond memories of England for me, they look the same there too. xx
Thanks Kay. Funny how you noticed the streetlights. My kids also commented on Irish streetlights this summer. “Look, they’re orange,” called out my little boys as we were driving along. I had never before noticed that streetlights are a brighter, white color in America.
Take care,
Mairéad
Absolutely lovely! Even though I’ve never been there it makes me oh so homesick.
Peggy
Peggy – I’m so glad you enjoyed this little glimpse of a Dublin sunrise.
All the best,
Mairéad
Beautiful photos and words, Mairead. God’s creation never ceases to inspire, huh? So happy that you have been able to enjoy some time in Ireland this summer. What a blessing!
Cheryl – I think everyone should get up early every now and then to experience the beauty of a sunrise. It’s good for the mind, spirit and soul. Sometimes we just plod on through life and forget to appreciate God’s blessings all around us.
Best wishes,
Mairéad
Beautiful pics and pros as always, here’s hoping the images were taken on the way home,
Cheers,
Brian.
Brian – I’m a woman with two homes now, so no matter where I am, in Ireland or America, I always feel at home.
All the best,
Mairéad
Such beautiful photos complement such a beautiful poem. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much, Bonnie. Glad you enjoyed this post.
Best wishes,
