Beauty to me lies in the radiating glow of the setting sun. Ireland’s west coast is renowned for spectacular sunsets, but today I thought I might share the magnificence of the setting sun across Dublin Bay.
This photo was taken from the beach at Sandycove on the southern shore of Dublin Bay.
Dublin City lies at the center of a horseshoe shaped bay facing east and stretching from Howth Head in the north to Dalkey Point in the south.
It is lovely to fly into Dublin Airport from America early in the morning, when the airplane flies towards the rising sun in the east, then turns over the bay to approach the runway from the sea. Sunrise is amazing over the watery horizon of the Irish Sea, but sunsets can be just as brilliant.
This sunset is seen from the northern tip of the bay at Howth Head. Dublin Bay sunsets are glorious. These pictures are a little taste of all that County Dublin has to offer. I hope it whets your appetite for our full tour of my home county which is coming up later this week.

We fell in love with Howth on our recent visit to Ireland.. Had one of the best seafood meals I’ve had in long time. loved the combination of fishing village and sailing harbor.
Hi Candy – I grew up very close to Howth, so I spent a lot of time there as a child. My great aunt used to take us to lunch at the St. Lawrence Hotel as a treat on special occasions. The hotel is no longer there, but I have lovely memories of our trips to Howth.
When I take my children to Ireland they love to take the DART train to Howth to visit the playground by the piers, and then to walk on the upper deck of the long pier out to the lighthouse. I am so happy you found Howth on your most recent trip to Ireland. It truly is a hidden treasure.
Love sunset/sunrise photos. The second one is so-o-o beautiful!
I’ve got some big news and a prayer request posted on my blog right now. Check it out when you get the chance! 🙂
Thanks for letting me know about your big news, Cheryl. You and your family will be in my prayers.
Hi Mairead,
The feeling of anticipation is still fresh in my memory when landing into Dublin airport, you have to have good luck to se a sunrise, though even through grey skies the arial view is amazing. I miss my yearly trips to Dublin to attend The Showcase craft shows and the long walks through the streets and parks. I think i’m overdo for a trip.
Cheers, and thanks for the photos,
Brian.
Brian – The aerial view from a plane approaching Dublin airport is amazing. I always remember returning from India many years ago, and feeling like I was returning to a magical, mystical homeland, when the plane popped out of the clouds and I could see all of Dublin spread out below. There is nothing like it on earth. All the best!
One of my favorite things is to be up early enough to catch a glorious sunrise from my deck while having my coffee…never fails to fill me with a sense of wonderment and awe…
Sunrises and sunsets do my heart and soul a world of good. Someday I hope to get up early enough to drive to the banks of the Ohio River, to see the sun rise in the east. I must do some research on a good location for viewing sunrise….. Then I just have to get the kids out of bed.
