New Irish Children’s Book Giveaway From Maureen O’Hanlon in County Cork

September 2, 2018 by Irish American Mom 78 Comments

A little Irish field mouse is the subject of a new Irish children’s picture book by County Cork native, Maureen O’Hanlon.  In today’s giveaway post, I’m delighted to introduce this little field mouse who’s on his way to visit the rainbow.

Maureen has previously shared her lovely photography of Doneraile Park with us and today she has graciously provided two copies of her new children’s book for two lucky readers to win.

But before I share the details of how to enter our sweepstakes, let’s first join this friendly little field mouse on his adventures.

Author Maureen O Hanlon announces release of ‘The Little Field Mouse Visits the Rainbow’ –

DONERAILE, Ireland – In Maureen O’Hanlon’s new book,“The Little Field Mouse Visits the Rainbow” (published by AuthorHouse UK), a woman meets a small field mouse on his way to visit the rainbow. This children’s book teaches young readers about the colors of the rainbow.

One day, as she is strolling along the countryside, a woman comes across a little field mouse jumping up and down with joy in a field.

When she asks the mouse why he’s so happy, he explains he has an appointment to visit the rainbow at 2 o’clock.

With the help of the seven rainbow chiefs – Berry, Petal, Stem, Blade, Leaf, Clover and Bud – the mouse journeys to make his way to finally meet the rainbow.

A peek inside this beautifully illustrated little book

Featuring pastel illustrations and large font, O”Hanlon explains the book is designed with young readers in mind.

She adds, “Because it’s educational, it will grasp their attention – it’s a funny, magical adventure and a very happy story.”

These books are written in a fireside, storytelling style using Irish spelling not American word format.

An Excerpt From “The Little Field Mouse Visits the Rainbow” –

The little field mouse had dressed in his best colourful clothes, a yellow hat with a purple rim, an orange jumper, blue pants, green socks and red shoes. He brushed his hair, cleaned his face, washed his paws, wiped his long tail and got his backpack ready.

The Little Field Mouse Visits The Sun – Maureen’s first book in her field mouse series.

Hi Kathleen – Irish rainbows are pure magic. I’ve seen rainbows in many parts of the world, but Irish rainbows are mystically enchanting. It’s hard to explain. I think the rich green shades of the surrounding landscape make the rainbow colors pop, even when the skies are a little grey.

    Good morning

Just a gentle reminder, my 2 childrens storybooks called The Little Fieldmouse visits the sun and the rainbow are also available from my home here in Ireland, I post all over the world, im currently writing my third childrens book called The little Fieldmouse visits the moon, these books are a series of the little Fieldmouse going on his adventures, I keep the same pastel colours and decor on the little Fieldmouses house, the little Fieldmouse always wears the same orange jumper, blue pants, green socks and red shoes so that children can identify with him and where where he lives, he lives with his Mummy and Daddy 4 little brothers and 3 little sisters in Doneraile wildlife park in Doneraile Co Cork where I live, I meet him everyday in my travels around our beautiful park when im out on daily walks, the fieldmouse and I are a great team as we plan his adventures and full filled day,.

    All the best

Hi Chris – Knowledge, learning, and teaching are integral to our core values as Cork people. My granny always had great respect for teachers. She would say – “nothing for you, but the book.” I need to repeat that with my kids to make sure they spend less time on electronics. It’s lovely to hear your niece has also chosen the teaching profession and that she is concentrating on special education. Encouraging children with learning challenges to blossom and grow is such a worthwhile vocation. This book would be lovely – my only warning is that some of the spellings are Irish versions of words rather than American, where for example, color is colour. I read many books from Ireland with my kids when they were little. I knew they were benefitting when they started to notice the differences in spellings.

Ohhhh. I would LOVE to win this sweet book. When my kids were little I found a book called Mother Mother, I want another. It too had adorable animals and a little one who told his at bedtime that he wanted another. She thinks he wants another mother and calls in the other mother animals to soothe her baby. I won’t give away the ending but it is beyond precious. I give it as gifts to any one who is expecting. My daughter and I took a 2 week holiday in Ireland and she told me I am going to be a NANNY!!!! Over the moon and either way these two books will be the start of this baby’s library.

Hi Maureen – Congratulations on the wonderful news. Being a grandmother is such a blessing. How sweet of your daughter to break the good news to you in Ireland. What a special occasion and a special place for sharing such important family news. I too love animal books for children. They teach us to respect nature and hold messages of kindness and compassion. With the advent of electronic games I think we need to do everything we can to share the gentler side of life and Mother Nature with our children.
So glad you had a recent opportunity to visit Ireland.

It’s amazing how many Irish Americans report feeling as if they are home when they visit Ireland, especially when they are lucky enough to know exactly from where their ancestors came. Ireland is our spiritual home and we seem to recognize that at some deep level when we visit.

Thank you all for the encouraging comments, they are a joy to read, and that you all adore the little Island of Ireland I live in , Like Mairead and Kathleen mentioned in a comment above the Irish rainbows are magical, when I was a small little girl my mother always told me there was a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and I was always trying to find it when ever I saw a rainbow 🙂 now as I am older im always in awe when I see a rainbow they just melt my heart, im 100% sure this is where my Childrens book stemmed from.
    Best regards
    Maureen
