There is something truly graceful about the Celtic harp. With its elegant curves and delicate strings, this beautiful instrument has long been a symbol of Ireland's rich musical heritage.
In fact, the harp is one of Ireland's oldest national emblems, representing tradition, artistry, and cultural pride.
Today I'm delighted to share a step-by-step instructional video showing you how to draw a Celtic harp.

Whether you're celebrating St. Patrick's Day, exploring Irish history, or simply enjoying a quiet sketching session, this tutorial will guide you through the process with ease.
A Timeless Irish Symbol to Sketch
In this video, I walk you through how to:
- Outline the graceful curved pillar of the harp
- Shape the soundbox and frame
- Add the top arm with its gentle sweep
- Draw evenly spaced strings
- Use simple shading techniques to add dimension
The finished drawing (pictured above) has a clean, classic look with softly shaded edges and carefully placed strings.
Even though the harp's curves may seem tricky at first, breaking the design into basic shapes makes it much more manageable.
Supplies You'll Need
You don't need anything elaborate for this project:
- White drawing paper
- Graphite pencils (HB for outlining and 2B for shading work beautifully)
- An eraser
- A ruler (helpful for evenly spaced strings)
- A blending stump or tissue for soft shading (or simply use your finger tip as in this video)
A steady hand and a little patience will go a long way.

Watch the Full Video Tutorial
Be sure to watch the full step-by-step video above, where we demonstrate each part of the harp clearly and slowly. Pause whenever you need to, take your time with the curves, and don't rush the string placement.
Drawing is about enjoying the process. Each harp you create will have its own character and charm.
So gather your pencils, find a quiet corner at the kitchen table, and let's draw a little piece of Ireland together.
