Origins of Cranberry Hot Toddies
The cranberry hot toddy is a creative twist on the traditional hot toddy, which itself has deep historical roots. The original hot toddy likely originated in 18th century Scotland or Ireland, where it was used both as a comforting winter drink and as a remedy for colds and flu.
The classic recipe typically involves a blend of hot water, whiskey, honey, and lemon, and its purpose was to bring warmth on cold nights and soothe sore throats, with the alcohol acting as a mild relaxant.
The addition of cranberries to the hot toddy came much later, likely as a result of regional adaptations in North America where cranberries are abundant, particularly in the northeastern United States and Canada. The cranberry itself is a Native American fruit, used for centuries by indigenous peoples for cooking, medicinal purposes, and dye.
As cranberries became a central part of American culinary culture, most famously in sauces for holiday meals, it was natural for them to find their way into winter drinks.
The cranberry hot toddy marries the old-world warmth of the traditional toddy with the tart, fruity flavors of North America's beloved cranberry.
The use of cranberry juice provides a delightful twist, adding a tangy sweetness that balances the honey and lemon, while enhancing the festive, wintry feel of the drink.
This blend has helped make the cranberry hot toddy a popular cocktail during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings, bringing together the comforting heritage of the classic toddy with a bright, festive flavor that celebrates the holiday season.
Ingredients for Spiced Cranberry Hot Whiskey
Here's what you'll need to make this delicious winter beverage. You'll find exact quantities in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- unsweetened cranberry juice
- orange, sliced
- cinnamon stick
- star anise
- whole peppercorns
- cloves
- honey
- bourbon or whiskey
Unsweetened Cranberry Juice adds a signature tartness that balances out the other sweet elements in the drink. Using unsweetened cranberry juice ensures the natural tangy flavor is prominent, which helps cut through the richness of the whiskey or bourbon. Cranberries also add a festive feel with their vibrant color, making the hot toddy not only tasty but visually appealing.
Orange provides a bright, citrusy element that complements the warmth of the spices and adds a hint of natural sweetness. The zest or a slice of orange can also introduce aromatic oils that enhance the sensory experience of the toddy. The citrusy notes from the orange help to elevate the flavor of the cranberry juice and balance the bitterness. The orange also brings a fruity complexity that enhances the holiday and wintery appeal of the toddy.
Cinnamon is an essential spice in many winter drinks because of its warm, aromatic flavor. A cinnamon stick slowly releases its flavor as it simmers, adding a rich, comforting spiciness. The cinnamon stick also works as a natural stirrer, gently infusing the drink with a cozy warmth that ties all the elements together.
Star Anise has a sweet, licorice-like flavor that adds an exotic and aromatic complexity to the toddy. It’s both slightly sweet and herbal, making it an interesting contrast to the tangy cranberry. Visually, star anise adds a beautiful garnish to the toddy. Its unique flavor adds depth and complements the warmth of the other spices, making each sip more aromatic and inviting.
Whole Peppercorns bring a hint of heat and a slightly spicy kick that enhances the warmth of the toddy without overwhelming the other flavors.
Cloves have a deep, intense flavor that’s slightly sweet and highly aromatic. They bring a traditional holiday spice note to the toddy, reminiscent of mulled cider or festive baked goods.
Honey adds sweetness to balance the tartness of the cranberry and the bitterness of the spices. Its floral notes provide a depth that refined sugars can’t match, and it helps smooth out the edges of the drink.
Bourbon or Whiskey is the backbone of the hot toddy, providing a rich, slightly sweet, and warming alcoholic base. Bourbon, with its caramel and vanilla undertones, enhances the overall sweetness and spice, while whiskey gives a more robust, grain-forward flavor. The alcohol brings warmth and a subtle kick that makes the drink feel cozy and indulgent. The choice between bourbon or whiskey is largely personal, but each adds a depth that works harmoniously with the other ingredients to create a balanced and satisfying hot toddy.
The alcohol also helps extract the flavors from the spices during the heating process, making it crucial to the infusion of flavors. But remember, you can make an alcohol free version of this cocktail by simply omitting the spirits.
Directions for Cranberry Hot Whiskey
Here you'll find step-by-step photographic instructions for making this warm, spiced and festive cocktail. You can print the recipe with or without photos using the recipe card at the end of this post.
First, we'll make a mulled cranberry juice.
Add the cranberry juice, orange, cinnamon, star anise, peppercorns, cloves and honey to a small pot over medium heat.
Bring to a simmer and lower the heat to low. Cover with a lid and cook for 12 to 15 minutes.
It's important to simmer this mixture to allow the flavors of the spices infuse through the cranberry juice.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and strain the mixture over a jar, bowl, or pitcher. Take care not to burn yourself with this warm liquid.
We're not going to cool this mixture down before adding it to the whiskey or spirits, since this is what gives us our signature hot toddy.
Divide the bourbon or whiskey between 4 mugs or glasses.
Top up each drink with the mulled cranberry juice.
You can use cinnamon sticks as stirrers for each drink.
You can garnish each drink with lemon, orange or blood orange slices or with star anise and a cinnamon stick.
If you are looking to make it fancier, rim the glass with sugar or even cinnamon sugar.
Do Not Make In Advance
A cranberry hot toddy is best made fresh because its key ingredients shine the brightest when they are freshly prepared, and the flavors are at their peak.
When served immediately, the warmth enhances the soothing qualities of the drink and allows all the aromatics, like cinnamon, cloves, and star anise, to be fully appreciated.
The heat releases essential oils from these spices, creating a more aromatic and flavorful experience that can be lost if the toddy sits too long and cools down.
The spices, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and peppercorns, are at their most flavorful when they are freshly steeped in the hot liquid.
If the toddy sits too long, the spices can either become too strong, overpowering the drink, or lose their aromatic impact. Fresh preparation allows you to achieve the perfect infusion, where the spices are present but not overbearing.
