Brian McDermott's Donegal Table is a cookbook featuring a wonderful selection of Irish inspired recipes, with an emphasis on healthy, delicious family meals.
Award-winning chef, Brian McDermott from County Donegal, showcases local Irish and Donegal recipes based on our cultural cooking traditions and his Donegal mammy's kitchen.
Here you'll find recipes for Sunday's Finest Roast Lemon and Thyme Chicken, Black Pudding Dipping Fritters, Irish Champ, Wild Atlantic Way Fish Pie, and Rhubarb Crumble to name but a few.
This week I have a signed copy of this wonderful cookbook as a prize for one lucky reader to win. But before we delve into our sweepstakes, let's first explore all that this book has to offer.
Table of Contents
A Lovely Recipe Book
The Donegal Table is what I call a lovely recipe book. I love to browse through my cookbook collection, indulging my senses with a feast of potential dishes and foods to add to my weekly menu.
This book stands out amongst my collection of Irish cookbooks. Not only is it chock full of fantastic Irish recipes, they're presented in a very entertaining, personal, and engaging manner.
Brian's recipes are the sort of food I grew up on, but his witty take on Irish cuisine brings the dishes of my past to life. Reading these recipes was like a vivid trip down a culinary memory lane for me.
Now, I grew up on traditional fare from County Cork, which is very similar to that found in County Donegal, with a few exceptions. A few of the dishes are grounded in the cooking of Ulster, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading their history, and browsing through the beautiful, full-color photography in this user-friendly publication.
This book is brimming over with the type of food I cook day in and day out. My table is laden with Irish fare, and the Donegal Table celebrates all that Irish food has to offer.
For years Irish food was often disparaged internationally, but as you know I make no apologies for Irish food. Irish ingredients are fresh, wholesome and full of flavor, and Chef McDermott puts them to work in delicious combinations that deservedly take Irish cooking onto the world stage.
I highly recommend this beautiful, hard cover, illustrated recipe book, that celebrates the Irish and Donegal table and our wonderful Irish culinary heritage.
About Chef Brian McDermott
Brian grew up in Burt in County Donegal. In his book he recalls fond memories of his family coming together at his mother’s kitchen table and connecting over her home cooking. Here's what he says on his website:
"Brian Mc Dermott is an award-winning celebrity Irish chef from Donegal. His latest book, Donegal Table, won Best Cookery Book in the World at the Gourmand World Book Awards in China.
Brian has built a national and international reputation as a chef on one simple belief – that tasty, healthy food based around traditional recipes and local produce is something everyone should enjoy. Fans of Brian McDermott will already be familiar with his passion for local food and his home county of Donegal which has made him a regular on television and radio and on the Irish food festival circuit."
Brian is one of the expert instructors at the Cookery School at The Foyle Hotel in Moville, County Donegal. In person classes are on hold for now, so Brian is teaching online. You can learn all about his classes on his website.
Where To Buy The Donegal Table
If you're interested in buying this lovely Irish cookbook here's a link for purchasing it from Walmart. It's also available from other book sellers such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
Brian also has a less expensive cookery book which is available in paperback at Walmart.
Both volumes are beautifully illustrated and the recipes are authentically Irish. This is Irish cuisine at its finest.

Finally, we got to visit Ireland and loved it. I had back surgery in the Hope that I could go again to see the parts we missed. It will be fun to tackle the terrain now. It is the most naturally diverse and beautiful place we’ve seen. I try some of my grandmother’s Irish dishes especially in the winter months. Would love your cookbook. Renee &!Ray

I love reading your posts and seeing the recipes. The recent one with crust less quiche reminds me of a sweet little tea shop in Alice Springs, Australia. It was run by a wonderful couple who retired and went back home to Ireland. (Guinness tasted different in Australia anyway.) I'll have to look for the cookbook online.
Irish American Mom
Hi Kathy - I visited Alice Springs way back in 1985. It was such a lovely town. I didn't discover the little tea shop run by the Irish couple, but I'm glad my crustless quiche reminded you of their menu. Thanks for stopping by.

"For years Irish food was often disparaged internationally, but as you know I make no apologies for Irish food. Irish ingredients are fresh, wholesome and full of flavor"
Funny that you wrote that. Growing up with an Irish mom, I used to think the same thing. That Irish food was boring, lacking pizazz. But as I left home, I found myself craving those homecooked meals. The real awakening though was my visit to Ireland, which gave me a whole new appreciation for Irish food. The clean taste and fresh ingredients as you mentioned, are unsurpassed. Looks like a great cookbook, one way or the other, I will have one. 🙂
Irish American Mom
Hi Ken - When I was growing up in Ireland one of our neighbors always said, "you don't need fancy sauces if you're cooking with wholesome, fresh ingredients." This sums up food in Ireland. The high quality of the ingredients is unsurpassed anywhere in the world. Lovely to hear you had the opportunity to savor a taste of Ireland during your trip.
Best wishes,
Mairéad

I still make Champ and Rhubarb Crumble, though not as often as I should! If I don't win this book I will definitely buy it. I cook a lot of different foods, Mexican, Italian, Greek and Indian but I always come back to my Irish roots. Can't beat a good aul Irish Stew, Shepard's Pie or an Ulster Fry!
Irish American Mom
Hi Geraldine - My husband travels for his job and after time away from home his first request for dinner is a good aul' Irish stew. You just can't beat a one-pot, wholesome, nourishing meal.

Rosemary
I made my first visit to Ireland in 2017 and I am crazy to go back! My most memorable Irish food moments were OF course dining on some fresh caught wild Atlantic Salmon, with a vege mash, and greens and it was amazing. But the one thing I tasted, several versions of, were the lovely blended soups that I want so badly to learn how to make! It would be fun to win this cookbook! I am newer to the blog and I LOVE it! Thanks!
Irish American Mom
Hi Rosemary - Irish soups are the very best. The lovely thing is that even if you travel to Ireland in the summer, soup is still on the menu. Our summers are seldom too warm to take soup off the menu. Thanks for stopping by to support this giveaway.

I have only one other Irish cookbook.
Its about time the world can experience the great recipes of Ireland.
Many, many thanks.

Donegal was such a happy surprise when we did our tour of Ireland three years ago. The best authentic Irish music and some surprisingly gourmet food! Would love to receive the cookbook!
Irish American Mom
Hi Beth - Donegal tends to be off the beaten track for most American tourists. Many people from Scotland and England have discovered its charms and make up the vast majority of tourists to this northwestern county. I encourage people to discover more than just the Ring of Kerry and the Cliffs of Moher when they visit Ireland. These tourist destinations tend to be very crowded in normal times. I'm so glad you discovered all that Donegal has to offer.
All the best,
