Brian McDermott's Donegal Table is a cookbook featuring a wonderful selection of Irish inspired recipes, with an emphasis on healthy, delicious family meals.
Award-winning chef, Brian McDermott from County Donegal, showcases local Irish and Donegal recipes based on our cultural cooking traditions and his Donegal mammy's kitchen.

Here you'll find recipes for Sunday's Finest Roast Lemon and Thyme Chicken, Black Pudding Dipping Fritters, Irish Champ, Wild Atlantic Way Fish Pie, and Rhubarb Crumble to name but a few.
This week I have a signed copy of this wonderful cookbook as a prize for one lucky reader to win. But before we delve into our sweepstakes, let's first explore all that this book has to offer.
Table of Contents
A Lovely Recipe Book
The Donegal Table is what I call a lovely recipe book. I love to browse through my cookbook collection, indulging my senses with a feast of potential dishes and foods to add to my weekly menu.
This book stands out amongst my collection of Irish cookbooks. Not only is it chock full of fantastic Irish recipes, they're presented in a very entertaining, personal, and engaging manner.
Brian's recipes are the sort of food I grew up on, but his witty take on Irish cuisine brings the dishes of my past to life. Reading these recipes was like a vivid trip down a culinary memory lane for me.
Now, I grew up on traditional fare from County Cork, which is very similar to that found in County Donegal, with a few exceptions. A few of the dishes are grounded in the cooking of Ulster, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading their history, and browsing through the beautiful, full-color photography in this user-friendly publication.
This book is brimming over with the type of food I cook day in and day out. My table is laden with Irish fare, and the Donegal Table celebrates all that Irish food has to offer.
For years Irish food was often disparaged internationally, but as you know I make no apologies for Irish food. Irish ingredients are fresh, wholesome and full of flavor, and Chef McDermott puts them to work in delicious combinations that deservedly take Irish cooking onto the world stage.
I highly recommend this beautiful, hard cover, illustrated recipe book, that celebrates the Irish and Donegal table and our wonderful Irish culinary heritage.

About Chef Brian McDermott
Brian grew up in Burt in County Donegal. In his book he recalls fond memories of his family coming together at his mother’s kitchen table and connecting over her home cooking. Here's what he says on his website:
"Brian Mc Dermott is an award-winning celebrity Irish chef from Donegal. His latest book, Donegal Table, won Best Cookery Book in the World at the Gourmand World Book Awards in China.
Brian has built a national and international reputation as a chef on one simple belief – that tasty, healthy food based around traditional recipes and local produce is something everyone should enjoy. Fans of Brian McDermott will already be familiar with his passion for local food and his home county of Donegal which has made him a regular on television and radio and on the Irish food festival circuit."

Brian is one of the expert instructors at the Cookery School at The Foyle Hotel in Moville, County Donegal. In person classes are on hold for now, so Brian is teaching online. You can learn all about his classes on his website.
Where To Buy The Donegal Table
If you're interested in buying this lovely Irish cookbook here's a link for purchasing it from Walmart. It's also available from other book sellers such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
Brian also has a less expensive cookery book which is available in paperback at Walmart.
Both volumes are beautifully illustrated and the recipes are authentically Irish. This is Irish cuisine at its finest.

Patty
Hi! My grandmother came from Malin Beg, Donegal and came over to America when she was a teen in early 1900’s. I had a trip planned last summer but was unable to go bc of covid. I am age 66 and remember what a perfect grandmother she was to all of us. She always said we would go to Ireland together, but of course we didn’t. I will go to see her homeland just as soon as possible. Meantime, I am learning as much as possible about Ireland and in doing so, I am happily remembering her.
Irish American Mom
Hi Patty - Thanks so much for sharing your memories of your grandmother, and I hope you make it to Donegal someday soon, when it's safe for us all to travel again. When you do go, your grandmother will be with you in spirit. This book is inspired by the food of Donegal, so your grandmother would have been familiar with many of these recipes. Thanks for supporting our giveaway.
All the best,

My favorite Irish food is hands down their brown bread, yum, yum, yum. Does Guinness count as a food too?

Hi Sue - Irish brown bread is fantastic, especially with a hearty bowl of soup, or washed down with a glass of Guinness. In Ireland, Guinness is definitely considered food - it's chock full of vitamins and iron.

Dave Bresnahan
Thanks for your email newsletter, blogs, recipes, and giveaways. We enjoy them all but this is our first chance to tell you. My people on my granny's side (Brennan) are from Wexford, and on my grandad's side (Bresnahan or Brosnan) from Kerry. We do lot of Irish cooking in our house and are always looking for new recipes. We were to travel back to visit the cousins this past summer, but of course the COVID shut things down. It will likely be another year before things will open up for us to travel to Ireland once a gain. All the best, and thanks for your wonderful website and newsletter.
Irish American Mom
Hi Dave - With a name like Breshahan, I just knew you were going to say your grandad was from County Kerry. Lovely to hear you like to continue our cooking traditions and enjoy some good Irish recipes. This inability to travel is hampering so many plans for family reunions and visits to Ireland, but at least we have turned a corner and we'll all be much safer in the not too distant future. Thanks for your kind words about my recipes and ramblings. Thanks so much for all of your support.
Best wishes,

Marty J
Thank you so much for two things. Last year you taught me the backstory behind my late Irish mother's tradition of turnips, known as rutabagas in America, at Thanksgiving. And secondly, you posted "God Bless the Corners of this House" recently. Not only haven't I thought of that blessing in about 50 years, but I also realize I can still sing it by Heart, as it was taught to me as a hymn by Sister Agnes with her pitch pipe in 3rd grade.
Like many others, I am experiencing a very difficult year. Thank you for the grace notes you sent my way. God bless you and Happy New Year.
Irish American Mom
Hi Marty - It's lovely to hear that my recipes and ramblings have brought back good memories for you. I truly love that Irish blessing for the home. I can just picture Sister Agnes with her pitch pipe now. In my school in Dublin, Sister Catherine had a tuning fork she loved to flick against the desk before balancing it for our note. No matter how much she tried, she had no hope of keeping me in tune - I'm a terrible singer unfortunately.
This past year has been a trial for everyone, but I'm sorry to hear that it's has been so difficult for you. I'm glad to hear my newsletters help you along the way.
Here's to a better, brighter and safer 2021. Thanks so much for subscribing to my email list.

I loved my visit to Letterkenny Donegal Co. I remember a quiet little pub
and some fantastic Fish Chowder. All along the Atlantic way I remember
enjoying this warming soup dish packed full of surprises in cream
sauce. I have heard Brian on the radio and would just love to add his book
to my special cookbook shelf! Molly of Pennsylvania USA
Irish American Mom
Hi Molly - Seafood chowder is extra nice in Ireland. It's either the fresh air or the wholesome, fresh ingredients found along our coastline that take Irish fish chowder to the next level of excellence. It's actually probably a little bit of both. Lovely to hear you enjoyed your time in Ireland and got to sample some of our delicious soups along the Wild Atlantic Way. Thanks for stopping by.
All the best,
Mairéad

Maureen Doyle Nelson
My parents took all eight of their kids to Ireland in 1978. Was lucky to go again with my mom before marriage and then for our 10th anniversary, my husband and I bought tickets the morning we found out that he had cancer. Had surgery, chemo, radiation and was able to go for our 11th anniversary. We stopped in Kenmare and ate at a place that had an upstairs and you could see the other shops from the window. We ordered steamed mussels in a garlic butter that I still remember! Yum! The other food memory was when I went for a fourth trip with my daughters, my mom and youngest sister. We stopped at a bakery and had a pastry that had fresh whipped cream and strawberries. Oh my goodness, it was heavenly. thanks for a chance to win a nice book and now that I am semi-retired, I am starting to get out cookbooks again to try some new dishes. Love your blog and emails.
Irish American Mom
Hi Maureen - How wonderful that your parents took all eight kids back to Ireland. They were brave. I travel with four, but eight of you was quite a tour group. Lovely to know you got to visit again with your mom, and for your 11th anniversary, and that your husband was healthy enough to travel and discover all that Ireland offers. It sounds like you've enjoyed some wonderful Irish food during your many trips. Thanks so much for following my recipes and ramblings.
All the best,
Mairéad
Seanny
I tried boxty for the first and only time at a pub in Doolin a few years ago and it was shockingly sweet. Is this normal? It was so sweet, I suspected the chef may have accidently confused the sugar for salt. Perhaps that is how they prepare in County Clare?
Irish American Mom
Hi Seanny - I think you might be right about your sweet boxty. It's definitely not supposed to be sweet, so it probably was a kitchen mishap. But then again, they may just be extra sweet in County Clare. Thanks for stopping by to support this giveaway.
Best wishes,
Mairéad
