There is something truly special about the Claddagh ring. With its tender hands, crowned heart, and rich Irish history, this beautiful symbol represents love, loyalty, and friendship, three values woven deeply into Irish culture.
Today I'm delighted to share a step-by-step instructional video showing you how to draw a Claddagh ring.

Whether you're celebrating St. Patrick's Day, exploring Irish heritage, or simply enjoying a peaceful sketching session, this tutorial will guide you gently through the process.
The Claddagh Ring - A Meaningful Irish Symbol to Sketch
In this video, I walk you through how to:
- Outline the heart at the center of the design
- Sketch the two hands that cradle the heart
- Add the crown resting proudly on top
- Shape the curved band of the ring
- Use simple shading techniques to create depth and dimension
Here's the video....
The finished drawing (pictured above) is shaded in soft graphite pencil, giving the ring a rounded, almost sculpted appearance. With careful blending and a bit of patience, the hands and heart seem to lift right off the page.
Even though the Claddagh may look intricate at first glance, breaking it down into simple shapes makes it completely manageable, even for beginners.
Supplies You'll Need
This project requires only a few basic materials:
- White drawing paper
- Graphite pencils (an HB and a softer 2B pencil work beautifully)
- An eraser
- A blending stump or tissue for smoothing shading
No fancy art supplies required, just simple tools and a willingness to give it a try.
A Lovely Activity for St. Patrick's Day
Drawing a Claddagh ring makes a meaningful art lesson and a lovely cultural activity. It works beautifully:
- As a St. Patrick's Day art project
- For homeschool history and art integration
- In the classroom while learning about Irish traditions
- As handmade artwork for cards or gifts
- For teens and adults who enjoy detailed pencil sketching
As you draw, you might even take a moment to reflect on the symbolism of the Claddagh Ring:
The heart for love.
The hands for friendship.
The crown for loyalty.
There's something quite special about putting pencil to paper and sketching a symbol that has been treasured in Ireland for centuries.

Be sure to watch the full instructional video where I guide you through each step clearly and at a gentle pace. Pause whenever you need to, sketch along slowly, and don't worry about perfection.
Art is about the process, not just the finished product. Each Claddagh ring you draw will have its own character, and that's part of its charm.
So gather your pencils, settle in at the kitchen table, and let's draw a little piece of Irish tradition together.
Happy crafting!☘️☘️☘️
