Donegal Tweed is a woolen fabric spun in Ireland that incorporates gorgeous coordinating flecks of color through the weave.
It is a distinctively Irish fabric.
For the fifth day of our Twelve Days of Christmas Irish Gift Giveaways, we have a lovely Donegal tweed scarf with all the colors of the Irish mountains to give away.
The colors of these scarves are simply magnificent.
This gift is once again brought to you by Aidan from Gifts of Ireland. He works closely with the weavers of Studio Donegal to bring you the very best of Irish tweed products.
And so, let's take a look and learn a little bit about Irish tweed and Studio Donegal.
(A quick tip from Mom - Take a look at the video at the top or side of this post to see the prize in more detail plus you'll hear a lovely Irish Christmas blessing at the end.)
Today's video shows the coloring of the scarf we have chosen as our prize. Our photos feature some other lovely color schemes which are also available.
Day 5 Prize: Studio Donegal Tweed Woolen Scarf
Based along the Wild Atlantic Way in southwest County Donegal in the village of Kilcar, Studio Donegal specializes in tradtional hand weaving of woolen textiles.
The history of manufacturing textiles here dates back to the 1700's. Rural cottage dwellers in the area supplemented their meagre farming incomes by spinning yarn and weaving tweed.
The area around Kilcar, and Glencolumbkille were extremely isolated in years gone by. Knitting and weaving provided many families with additional income helping them to remain in the area and not be forced to emigrate.
Donegal tweeds and knitwear are renowned all over the world, and thankfully these textile industries provide employment for many people in the area.
In the 1980's Studio Donegal was established by Kevin Donaghty and his wife Wendy. They purchased handlooms and leased old buildings from Connemara Fabrics and grew this local industry into a thriving company, dedicated to the production of handmade fabrics.
The most remarkable colors feature in the scarves produced by Studio Donegal.
The mellow tones, and color palettes of the yarns reflect the ever changing hues of the Irish countryside.
From mountain heather shades of purple, vibrant yellow gorse, seaweed browns, fawny mosses, and forty shades of Irish greens, these scarves reflect the beauty of Ireland's landscape.

Maybe I am not too late to enter! Well, I had my only trip to Ireland at 68 in 2018. It was so limited-only 4 days out of Dublin. My dream is to go back & see so much more but it seems more & more unlikely that I will be able to afford a more extensive trip or even get there at all. Well if I win, at least I will have a piece of Ireland near my heart.
Irish American Mom
Hi Judie - I hope you make it back to Ireland someday soon. There is so much to see and do. Dublin is wonderful, but the west coast is breathtaking. Thanks so much for following my recipes and ramblings.

Andrew James Sheiner
Donegal scarf looks lovely. I'd like to give it to my wife for Christmas who wears scarves regularly. She doesn't have too many as she prefers quality over quantity. And this gorgeous piece fits that bill. 🙂 She's part Irish (nee Nolan). My maternal grandmother was an Irish-American labor leader and Screenwriter's Guild founder (now WGA, Writers Guild of America) Mary McCall, Jr. As a young woman she went to the ould sod after college to study writing in Dublin. As a kid she would make sure my sister and I learned of Irish heritage by playing John McCormack's renditions of Irish classic songs. She'd take us to Irish chop houses in LA. And later she left us her collections of Irish literature and even a rare 78 record of James Joyce reading from Ulysses. My wife and I hope to visit Ireland and Northern Ireland when things get less crazy travel wise. Until then we can learn and support Irish craftspeople and artists, as well as cook Irish dishes with the help of your wonderful blog. Thanks and keep up the good work, Andrew 🙂
My last name and dad's parents were Ashkenazi Jewish from Latvia and Ukraine. They met here when my grandmother came over World War 1. Our name Sheiner is an Ellis Island corruption of the Yiddish word Shayna, meaning pretty or handsome. Almost all of Jewish relatives on my dad's side stayed in New York. So growing up in Los Angeles I only met them a few times. My Aunt Rosie would visit sometimes and would pinch my sister's and my cheeks and say, "Shayna punim!" Cute cheeks! Lol.
Irish American Mom
Hi James - Thank you for sharing your family story and your links to Ireland. Your grandmother sounds like an incredible woman. She achieved so much. Her literature collection sounds like a priceless family heirloom. It's amazing how many names were changed and recorded incorrectly at Ellis Island. It mush make genealogical research so difficult for some people. It's wonderful that you know so much about your family and your heritage. Thanks for reading my ramblings,
All the best,
Mairéad
Susan
This scarf reminds me of my Irish mum, who loved to wear bright, colorful coats and accessories in the winter to "cheer up the drab." She passed away the day after Christmas last year but her spirit lives on in her children and grandchildren.
Irish American Mom
Hi Susan - So sorry to learn that you lost your mum last year. I love her outlook about wearing bright colors in winter. It's always important to "cheer up the drab." Have a wonderful Christmas filled with fond memories.
All the best,
Mairéad
