The Quiet Man cottage is in Cong, County Mayo. It's where the iconic Irish movie of the same name was filmed.
For the third day of our Twelve Days of Christmas Irish Gift Giveaways, we have a very special prize, especially for any Maureen O'Hara or John Wayne fans.
This gift is once again brought to you by Aidan from Gifts of Ireland. It is a shout out to one of Ireland's most beloved films or movies.
And so, without further ado, let me show you our third lovely prize.
(A quick tip from Mom - Take a look at the video at the top or side of this post to see the prize in more detail plus you'll hear a lovely Irish Christmas blessing at the end.)
Day 3 Prize: Belleek Quiet Man Cottage Ornament
Have you every watched the film, The Quiet Man? It's one of Ireland's most beloved movies.
John Ford's 1952 Oscar winner is a tribute to an Ireland that no longer exists, or one that may never have existed outside of the imagination of poets and storytellers. It's a classic.
Sean Thornton, played by John Wayne, is a boxer who leaves America after accidentally killing an opponent in the ring. He returns to his native Ireland, with an eye to purchasing his family's old homestead. He wants to get away fromt the hustle and bustle of life in America and simply live in peace.
But it isn't long before he falls for Mary Kate Danaher, played by Maureen O'Hara, the fiery red head, and sister of Will Danaher, who had his eye on the Thornton property.
Will objects to the budding romance between his sister and the American, and when she marries Sean, her brother refuses to pay her dowry. Well, Mary Kate will not accept she is married until her husband claims her dowry. She wants that dowry, even if her peace loving husband has to fight for it. Sparks fly, the drama explodes, and movie history is made as the story of the Danahers and Thorntons unfolds on the screen.
By today's standards Thornton's treatment of Mary Kate may be considered politically incorrect, but it was made in a different era. No matter what, I think this film will always remain a classic.
The movie was filmed on location in Cong, County Mayo in the west of Ireland. The cottage still remains in this quaint little village, near the famous Ashford Castle hotel.
The streets of the village are beautiful, and any visitor who has seen the movie will immediately recognize where some of the scenes were shot.

I'm learning wonderful insights on your site, like"aoibhneas croi'!"
Would "slainte' aoibhneas" mean "health & joy of heart"
without "croi'"?
Thanks for the contest too.
Irish American Mom
Hi Maureen - Sláinte agus aoibhneas would mean health and joy. The word croí means heart. So glad you enjoy learning new Irish language words.
All the best,
Mairéad
Sheila Kearney

Julie Roberson
The Quiet Man is one of the reasons we went to Ireland for our 25th Wedding Anniversary in 2015. The Quiet Man was also the first VHS movie we bought as a married couple! We love the movie and have friends now in the lovely village of Cong. It's our happy place. We returned every year to Ireland after our 25th anniversary until Covid. We are missing Ireland and our dear friends in country. Speaking of one of our friends, if you haven't read any of John Connell's books, they are wonderful. The Cow Book was our first to read and it's an honest story of farm life. I love his writing style. Thank you for sharing this post. It has made a few Texans, who miss Ireland, quite happy. =) ~ Julie
Irish American Mom
Hi Julie - How wonderful to have found your "happy place" in Ireland. Hopefully you'll get back there sometime in the not too distant future. It's so important to connect with friends, and enjoy those happy times of chatting and story telling together. Thanks for the recommendation about John Connell's books. I'll check it out. A Cow Book is perfect reading for me. Thanks for stopping by to check out this week's giveaway.
All the best,
Mairéad
Jill Ferguson
What a sweet creation! I haven't watched the movie yet, but it is now on my must-see list. And as John Wayne (aka Marion Morrison) is a distant relative of my husband--or so we've been told by his grandmothers--it sounds like an even better idea. Thank you to both you & Aidan for this lovely contest!
Irish American Mom
Hi Jill - In Ireland we would say that Marion Morrison is a thirty-first cousin of your husband's. Since John Wayne is family, then you definitely should watch the Quiet Man. It's vintage cinema at its best. Thanks for stopping by.
All the best,
Mairéad
Amanda
This is a movie I guess I need to watch! Thanks for all the information!
Irish American Mom
Hi Amanda - If you like old movies, and movies about Ireland, then I definitely recomment The Quiet Man. Thanks for stopping by to support this giveaway.
All the best,
Mairéad
