There is something timeless and deeply meaningful about a Celtic design inspired cross. Its strong lines and intricate patterns speak of faith, heritage, and the enduring beauty of Irish design.
Today I'm sharing a step-by-step instructional video that shows you how to draw a Celtic Knotwork Cross, a cross formed entirely from interwoven knot patterns.
Now, this is not the typical Celtic cross you may be picturing. Traditional Celtic crosses often feature a circle surrounding the intersection of the cross beams.

In this design, however, there is no surrounding ring. Instead, the entire cross is created using continuous Celtic knotwork, woven over and under in a beautiful, flowing pattern.
A Cross Created with Celtic Knotwork
In this tutorial, I guide you through:
- Sketching the basic cross framework
- Dividing the shape into equal sections for symmetry
- Drawing the interlacing knot pattern
- Creating the over-and-under weaving effect
- Adding shading for depth and dimension
The finished drawing (pictured above) has a hand-sketched look with visible construction lines and gentle shading. Those light guide marks are actually helpful, since they show how structure and planning create such intricate designs.
Although Celtic knotwork may look complicated at first glance, it becomes quite manageable when broken down into simple steps.
Supplies You'll Need
This project requires only basic drawing materials:
- White drawing paper
- A ruler (for clean, balanced lines)
- Graphite pencils (HB and 2B work well)
- An eraser
- A blending stump or tissue for soft shading
Patience and careful attention to the weaving pattern are the real "secret ingredients."
A Meaningful Irish Art Lesson
This Celtic Knotwork Cross makes a wonderful:
- St. Patrick's Day art project
- Faith-based classroom activity
- Homeschool art and history lesson
- Introduction to Celtic design principles
- Detailed sketching project for teens and adults
As you draw the interwoven strands, you may notice how the continuous lines symbolize eternity, a theme often reflected in Celtic art.
Watch the Full Video Tutorial
Be sure to watch the full instructional video where I demonstrate each step slowly and clearly. Pause the video as needed, take your time with the weaving sections, and don't rush the shading.
Remember, Celtic knotwork is all about rhythm and repetition. Once you understand the pattern, it becomes almost meditative to draw.
So gather your pencils, straighten your ruler, and let's create a beautiful piece of Irish-inspired art together.
