Love Irish tweed. Bought my Husband a couple sports jackets in Ireland. They never seem to wear out and always look so smart. Ellen Keeler.
Irish American Mom
Hi Ellen - Tweed truly is a durable and well-wearing fabric. Lovely to hear that you have had this experience with your husband's sports jackets from Ireland.

Donegal tweed is a beautiful fabric! My Papa Pearson's home town of Donegal hosts the best tweed hats of anywhere --- Hanna Hats! And of course, I wear my newsboy cap whenever I can!
Irish American Mom
Hi Bob - Hanna Hats are wonderful. A few years back I featured a giveaway for a tweed Hanna hat. It was a lovely prize.
Glad to hear you continue to wear your Irish tweed cap.
Best wishes,
Mairéad

Judith (O’DONNELL) Anderson
My paternal grandparents came from Kellibegs Donegal Donegal Ireland I grew up with tweed garments from Donegal but my grandson has never had one, fingers crossed for Irish Luck ☘️🍀🤞
Irish American Mom
Hi Judith - With a maiden name like O'Donnell your heritage is certainly from Donegal. Killibegs is a beautiful town, renowned as a fishing harbor, and very close to the tweed producing villages just west of it. It's lovely to hear you grew up wearing tweed. I'm delighted that tweed continues to be used to create beautiful clothes for children and adults today.
All the best,
Mairéad
Noeleen
We have four grandsons (all under age four) and another grandchild due in September 2019. I would just love to see all five little boys running around and playing with their tweed vests on! So adorable! I think I need to start sewing!
Irish American Mom
Hi Noeleen - Five grandsons sporting Irish tweed vests would be so adorable. Many thanks for checking out this post.

I've two Irish tweed flat caps which I dearly love, one purchased in Glengarriff, one in Killarney. Wonderful material and craftsmanship!
Irish American Mom
Hi Brian - Lovely to hear you wear your tweed caps with Irish pride.

Nancy McTernan
Beautiful and interesting. Recently enjoyed watching on u-tube from Donegal the process of turning flax to lenen.
Irish American Mom
Hi Nancy - The story of flax and Irish linen is definitely a topic I need to explore here on my blog. Flax was grown in the areas around Belfast, but there also was a lot of flax grown in West Cork. The process of preparing the flax was complicated and extremely interesting. Signs of flax production are still evident along some of Ireland's streams.
Thanks for stopping by.

Emily
This leaves me so disappointed that we don't get enough winter on the west coast to make proper use of tweeds - though I have a little cousin in the mid west who would make the perfect model for these beautiful goodies!
Irish American Mom
Hi Emily - I lived in Florida for 8 years and I missed the seasons. It was always nice to visit somewhere colder in the winter and get to put on a warm winter coat. Good to hear you have a little cousin who would wear this little tweed vest and bowtie with Irish pride.
All the best,
Mairéad
Dr. Patryce Adair
Well thank you very much for the informative and warming of Irish fashion.
Appreciate learning about my ancestors of my Father's Clans..
Perhaps a day may come where I will be able to visit their home lands, but in the mean time I enjoy traveling with you all as you share your stories and families with us (the Irish of heart and soul) in America.
Irish American Mom
Hi Patryce - I'm delighted to hear you enjoy this type of blog post and that you love exploring and learning about your Irish heritage. I hope you do get to visit Ireland someday soon.

Jane C Petz
I was watching 'A Stitch in Time' and this history of Galway Tweed reminded me of how important wool was many centuries ago for warmth and to keep you dry. Well made tweed is beautiful and durable.
Irish American Mom
Hi Jane - Wool and flax were extremely important in the making of Irish textiles in years gone by. I must create a post about Irish linen someday soon.
Many thanks for stopping by.
Mairéad
Anne Parsons
Many years ago, I ordered tweeds and plaids from the Hebrides to make coats for my children.
We now have eight great grandchildren who would love to wear Donegal tweed.
Irish American Mom
Hi Anne - You were an industrious seamstress making coats for your children. I remember my mom used to sew all of my clothes when I was young. She was very talented. It's lovely to see that tweed is still being used today to make stylish designs for young and old.
All the best,
Mairéad
Jane
What a lovely way to continue our traditions! Thank you!!
Irish American Mom
Hi Jane - I love the modern designs of these tweed clothes. They are stylish yet still true to their origins and the age old traditions represented by Irish tweed.

Virginia Hunt
Would love to win this for my 4 year old grandnephew, Cameron. His Daddy, who he misses so much, passed away in a car accident. Cam has 2 sisters (who love to dress up), and he is now the “man” of the family. He would love to wear this tweed vest to represent his, and Daddy’s heritage.
Irish American Mom
Hi Virginia - I am so sorry to hear that your grandnephew lost his father so tragically. A tweed vest would be a lovely way for Cameron to connect with his Irish heritage and his Daddy's side of the family. Many thank for stopping by and sharing your family story.
Le gach dea-ghuí (with every good wish)

Leslie Carroll Lotz
I remember a coat my mother--my "Irish" mother--wore many years ago. It was an Irish tweed with a black velvet collar. It was of a herringbone design. I also recall my dad wearing a herringbone tweed sports coat with leather patches at the elbow on the sleeves. Perhaps my Irish-American mother picked it out for him! Yes, it was a warm and comfortabel jacket that he wore often and enjoyed. I am so delighted to be part of this site to learn more about my Irish heritage from this side of the Atlantic. Leslie
Irish American Mom
Hi Leslie - Black velvet collars on herringbone tweed coats were very popular in the 1960's and 1970's. I'm so glad this post brought back memories of your mom's Irish coat. Thank you for following my recipes and ramblings and for being part of this little Irish American community.
All the best,
Mairéad
