Who knew salt water taffy would be the most popular candy in Washington and Nebraska?
I think of salt water taffy as a summertime, vintage treat. But no! It's still in high demand, even at Halloween.
When I was a little girl growing up in Ireland, my aunt who lived in New Jersey brought some salt water taffy from Atlantic City with her on vacation. I remember being amazed by the unique flavors, all completely new to my Irish palate.

Now I couldn't find my favorite American candy anywhere on this list, probably proof my candy eating skills where honed in Ireland, not the US.
I have a deep seated weakness for Whoppers. Their honeycomb, malty centers bring back childhood memories of Maltesers, melting against the roof of my mouth. Sheer delight for my sweet tooth.
Let's take a look at my home state of Kentucky.
A new winner has emerged in the past 2 years. Tootsie Pops previously took the honors in the Bluegrass State. Now, Swedish Fish have come out of nowhere to take the crown with over 73,000 pounds.
Still, over 53,000 pounds of those yummy lollipops with the Tootsie Roll center were consumed for the #2 spot. Reese’s Cups were #3, a favorite with my kids.
Insights into the results for all the states are available here.
Irish people love candy, or sweets as they are called in the Emerald Isle. In 2016 Ireland ranked second in the world behind Germany in a per capita consumption of candy rating by a London based company, Euromonitor.
Here's a post I wrote comparing Irish sweets with American candy. I hope it helps you discover your favorite Irish chocolate bar, important information for chocolate lovers planning a trip to Ireland.

Sweet. IAM! Just sweet! Why, however, is it surprising that a state whose western border is the grand Pacific Ocean should have a preference for "saltwater"taffy? Nebraska: now that's a surprise, although there is a naval installation in the mid-west near Bloomington, Indiana. And Washington's love of Skittles? That's just a recent confectionary shift thanks to the former Seahawk great Marshawn Lynch. Yours is interesting and helpful information. I'll keep it in mind on All Hallow's Eve. TMJ

Hi Terry - Salt water taffy, a Nebraskan favorite - now that really surprised me. And the northeast's love of sour patch kids - I knew they are popular but I was amazed to find they're in the number one spot in a few states. I'm glad you enjoyed this interactive candy map - Halloween is always a time for a little fun.
All the best

Love the results for KS - #1 is Reese's Cups, #2 M&Ms #3 Snickers. Don and I evidently live in the right state because my favorite candy is M&Ms and his is Snickers. And we love Reese's cups too 🙂

Hi Cheryl - That's amazing that your tastes in candy are coincide with the results of this little candy investigation. I like peanut candy but they don't feature in my list of favorites. My problem is that I like too many candies and Halloween is a dangerous time when trying to curb my sweet tooth.
Best wishes,
