Table of Contents
The Irish Cookbook
Cookbooks line my bookshelves and I am the proud owner of many Irish recipe collections. But I kid you not! I was blown away by the variety of tasty recipes, superb food photography, and unique stories of Irish culinary excellence in this magnificent volume.
And so, as we celebrate Saint Patrick this year, I am delighted to let you know, the good folks at Phaidon Publishers have offered a beautifully bound, hardback copy of The Irish Cookbook for one lucky reader to win.
But before I share details of how to enter our little giveaway, let us first delve into the tasty pages of this publication.
The Story of Irish Food
This is no ordinary cookbook. Here you will find more than just a simple collection of traditional recipes. This book goes way beyond other Irish cookbooks.
It tells the story of Irish food, its unique culinary origins, and the amazing wild resources found all over the island of Ireland.

Irish food is not always fully appreciated on the global food stage. We face a challenge of Irish food only being associated with the potato. Now don't misunderstand me! There's nothing wrong with our beloved potato, but Ireland's food heritage is far more expansive and deep, than simple potato dishes might lead you to believe.
Jp McMahon is eager to change this perception of Irish food. In this remarkable work, he recounts Ireland’s rich food history, which believe it or not, dates back millennia.
He showcases the true depth of Irish cuisine, through traditional recipes, featuring unique flavor profiles and ingredient combinations.

The Irish Cookbook is a joyful masterpiece, which will enhance your cooking skills and techniques, while inspiring you to try new recipes.
You'll find Irish dishes for all times of day, for special occasions and everyday meals, and recipes to suit all four seasons.
This is an inspirational book that I will open again and again, not only when I am planning to cook, but also when I wish to indulge my senses in the pure pleasure of reading about food.
I'll use it to cook for the people I love, and I know these dishes will appeal to their Irish taste buds. And if you're thinking of cooking to try to persuade someone of Irish heritage to love you, then this is the book to help you win over their affections.
McMahon will not only inspire your culinary ambitions, but also help you to realize them, Irish style.
His cookbook does not belong hidden away on a dusty bookshelf, but is truly worthy of display on a coffee table. It will entertain food lovers, as they browse through tantalizing photographs of his tasty dishes.
The Irish Cookbook's Recipe Collection
For the book, McMahon undertook the mammoth task of bringing together nearly 500 authentic Irish recipes into one impressive volume.
Several years in the making, The Irish Cookbook contains hundreds of home-cooking recipes. The author researched and adapted old recipes found in the archive material available in the National Library of Ireland.

He poured over recipe books from Ireland’s best food writers, chefs and home cooks. He compiled classic dishes, lost and secret recipes and explored Ireland's ancient ingredients. In addition, he included modern and contemporary dishes inspired by Ireland's innovative chefs and foodies of today.
The featured dishes have been organized into 15 chapters by ingredient such as eggs and dairy; vegetables; shellfish; poultry; boar and pork; breads, scones, and crackers; stocks, sauces, and condiments; just to name a few.
The Irish Cookbook spotlights both authentic traditional recipes such as:
- Colcannon,
- Coddle,
- Dingle Pies,
- Soda Bread,
- Gur Cake,
- and Barm Brack.
It also features fresh new takes on classic dishes using native ingredients, such as
- Oysters with Wild Garlic Butter;
- Baby Carrots with Buttermilk and Tarragon Oil;
- Crab Claws with Seaweed and Samphire;
- Chicken with Morels and Cider.

The Irish Cookbook showcases the true depth of Irish cuisine, its ingredients, and its fascinating history, as never before. Presenting well-loved and beautifully photographed traditional dishes, this book also introduces new dishes and recipes that will be loved by generations to come.
What The Critics Are Saying
Here's how this amazing book has been received and reviewed in the editorials of many newspapers and global publications:
"The Irish Cookbook inspires at the hands of renowned chef Jp McMahon... and celebrates the unique culinary culture of the island and the roots of its hearty flavours and warm hospitality."—Forbes
"With an eye on terrain, McMahon offers both authentic and innovative approaches to modern Irish cooking."—Publishers Weekly

"The weighty collection investigates the 'peasant tradition' presumption, explores historical and contemporary cooking (McMahon went deep into Irish recipe archives), and champions the produce Ireland naturally offers up."—The Irish Examiner
"This is a hefty refutation of any lingering sense that food culture away from the mainland of Europe is about assembling as many beige and brown items as possible and encasing them in pastry... 480 recipes which showcase the extraordinary produce found across the island of Ireland, from oysters and fish to beef and lamb, as well as pointing out all sorts of bits and pieces that can be easily foraged."—Esquire
High praise indeed, and I too give this book an enthusiastic two thumbs up.

Tina Ingram
Hello! I am trying to learn as much as I can about my irish heritage. Every one who knows me knows I am very joyful, but can have a short fuse. I blame it on the red hair, lol. Though getting better with age. Any who i love to cook, actually to bake. So this cook book would be amazing. Have happy Saint Patrick's Day. Keep smiling 🙂
Irish American Mom
Hi Tina - It's lovely to hear you're exploring your Irish heritage, and I'm delighted you found our little corner of the web to help you on you journey of discovery. I have plenty of Irish recipes here, and hope to share many more in the future. This cook book is amazing and perfect for any Irish cook or anyone who likes to cook and explore food from around the world.
I like how you admit you have a short fuse, and link it to your red hair and Irish heritage. I have dark hair (well I had dark hair and now need a little help from the good folks at Clairol or L'Oreal) and my husband says I have a long fuse. But he says, "if she blows, she blows" and that's when everyone knows I'm Irish. Thanks so much for stopping by, and adding to our conversation.
All the best,
Mairéad ☘☘☘

Hi Lisa - That's lovely to hear - thanks for giving my recipes your seal of approval. My Guinness stew is a little different to a traditional recipe. I call it Mexican-Irish fusion cooking - the chocolate chips give the stew a lovely flavor profile.

☘️Slainte!
Irish American Mom
Hi Gary - My Granny smiled down on us from Heaven as I read this. Lovely to hear your youngest requested her soda bread. It's delicious and every time I bake it, I think of her as I let the fairies escape as I mark a cross on the top before baking. I'm so glad you found my recipe.
Wishing you and yours all the best this Saint Patrick's Day, and many thanks to your youngest for serving in the Navy.

Anna
Happy St. Patrick's Day! Thank you for this great review of this cookbook!!! I love learning about traditional Irish foods, and recreating them in my kitchen. My pantry is a bit bare at the moment and I can't get out to the store today, thanks to the virus, so I won't be able to make traditional Irish dishes as I normally enjoy doing on St. Patrick's Day. But that's okay! Another year! 🙂
Irish American Mom
Hi Anna - You'll have to postpone your Irish celebrations like all the world has done. Pick a day in a few months time, when all this is in the past, and make a nice soda bread or stew in honor of Saint Patrick.

Laura C Kiser
Thank you for the opportunity to win this book! I am exploring my Irish heritage and in the process learning about and embracing all things Ireland! My family name is Crowley, probably from Co Cork, but I met a lovely Mr Martin Crowley when I visited Galway last year. He could have come straight out of one of my family albums-the resemblance was quite striking. Happy St Patrick’s Day to all.
Irish American Mom
Hi Laura - Crowley is a very popular name in County Cork. There are lots and lots of Crowleys in West Cork, where my folks are from. Your Martin Crowley fro Galway could be a 31st cousin. That's what my granny used to say when we'd meet someone with the same last name - "he's probably a 31st cousin of yours!" she would declare with a grin on her face. And so, the resemblance to your relatives my be no coincidence.
I'm delighted to hear you're exploring your Irish heritage. That's what this little corner of the world wide web is all about.
Have a lovely day celebrating your Irishness.

Half of my Heritage is Scotch/Irish I am in my 60's and don't have my dad to remind me of his favorite recipes or how to cook them I guess I should have listened more or wrote it down. This book would help a lot. Thank you so much for the opportunity to have one.

Hi Cheryl - I too often wish I had written down more of my grannys' stories and recipes. When we're young we just take everything for granted and forget that we need to record things for the future. It's nice to think a book like this could bring back memories of your dad's favorite meals.
All the best,
Mairéad
