May The Road Rise To Meet You is one of the most famous Irish blessings of all.
This blessing is celebrated on a Belleek Pottery Irish Blessing plate.
Table of Contents
May The Road Rise To Meet You
The words of this blessing go like this:
May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
May the rains fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
This verse is painted onto a Belleek pottery plate surrounded by shamrocks and the image of a man with a dog walking on an Irish country road toward a small thatched cottage.
This traditional Irish blessing is an ancient Celtic prayer, and the original version is in Irish.
Once again I am teaming up with Aidan from Gifts of Ireland to bring you another Irish gift this Christmas.
And so, without further ado, let me show you our tenth lovely prize.
(A quick tip from Mom - Take a look at the video at the top or side of this post to see the prize in more detail.)
Day 12 Prize: Health, Love and Happiness Framed Ogham Wishes Wall Art
Celtic literature reveals that our ancestors were very close to nature. Old manuscripts, like the Book of Kells, are filled with images of nature. This old blessing talks about how God interacts with us through nature.
"May The Road rise up to meet you" focuses on God blessing us for a journey. The invocation is that your journey may be an easy one. The road will meet your step by rising up toward you. There will be no big obstacles along the way.
The blessing also calls upon the wind, the sun and the rain to bless us along life's journey. The wind is called upon to blow us onward from behind, to aid us as we progress along our way.
The sun is called upon to warm us on our way, and the rain is to fall softly on our fields.
This blessing is telling us that God will protect us as we journey through life. With faith in God, He will provide for us, and hold us in the hollow of His hand.
Belleek Pottery is located in County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland, and this company has been making pottery since 1857 in the small village that shares the same name, Belleek.

At the top of this post I've shared a short video featuring this lovely prize.
I met with Aidan from Gifts of Ireland in Dublin, and we shot an information video together highlighting each prize for our giveaway series.
At the end of the video I share how this blessing sounds in the Irish language.
"Go n-éirí an bóthar leat
Go raibh an ghaoth go brách ag do chúl
Go lonraí an ghrian go te ar d'aghaidh
Go dtite an bháisteach go mín ar do pháirceanna
Agus go mbuailimid le chéile arís,
Go gcoinní Dia i mbos A láimhe thú."

My grandmother had a similar plate with this Irish blessing on it and when she died my mum got it. Sadly it broke because my brother played hockey in the house one day and the hard ball bashed it into teeny pieces. My mom was heartbroken. To have such a plate would be a blessing.
A. County Fermanagh

Hi Kathy - Your mother must have been heartbroken when her plate was smashed to smithereens. This little prize would be perfect for you, and a great way to replace that plate from years ago. Good luck in our drawing.

Veronica Colacci
I love all the Irish sayings but I cannot choose which one is my best ...........but of course this is one of them. I love so many of them. My grandmother immigrated from Ireland and her ashes were sent back there because she wanted to be with her sisters. Ireland is on my bucket list and I hope I make it. Here is another favorite saying of mine; "Sometimes GOD put us in the dark, because he wanted us to see that he is the light".
Irish American Mom
Hi Veronica - Thank you for sharing that lovely saying about God and light. It's beautiful. Lovely to hear that your grandmother's wish was granted and that her ashes were returned to Ireland to be with her sisters. I'm like your grandmother, in that I hope to be buried in Ireland. I've already bought a grave plot in the local cemetery in County Cork, where my father's family are from. It's an Irish thing to think like that. I hope you make it to Ireland someday soon. Best of luck in our giveaway.
Take care,
Mairéad

Kira Law
This is such a lovely plate, I confess I'd never heard of Belleek china before. I'm also curious where that famous blessing came from, was there a localized book of prayers that contains it or do we know?
Irish American Mom
Hi Kira - This blessing was handed down through an oral history tradition in Ireland from the time of the Celts. Legend has it that it was Saint Patrick himself who composed the verse, but I think that might a bit of a stretch. The blessing was originally a Celtic prayer. In pre-Christian Ireland there was a tradition of sharing blessings. These got reinterpreted and transformed as Ireland evolved into a Christian country. Thanks for stopping by.
All the best,
Mairéad
