Sacred Stone, Sacred Water is a skillfully crafted book of inspiring reflections on Ireland's spiritual places, paired with spectacular evocative photographs of Ireland's sacred landscape.
This beautiful book is edited by writer and teacher, Carolyn Brigit Flynn, and designed by artist, Janis O'Driscoll. Together, they created an elegant and intimate collection of writing, art and photography evoking Ireland’s wild beauty and deep soul.
Table of Contents
Ireland's Thin Places
In our little corner of the internet, we previously explored the significance of Ireland's thin places, sacred sites where heaven and earth seem to meet. This book is a further exploration of these sacred spaces.
Today, I'm delighted to share a giveaway for a copy of this beautiful book. But before we get into the details of how to enter our sweepstakes, let me first hand you over to the editor, Carolyn Brigit Flynn, to explore her writing inspirations.
Sacred Stone, Sacred Water Edited by Carolyn Brigit Flynn
'Sacred Stone, Sacred Water' is an elegant and intimate collection evoking Ireland's wild beauty and deep soul through the work of fourteen American women writers and artists.
I am an author and writing teacher, and the book emerged from a writing retreat and tour I taught in three parts of Ireland in September 2016 called "Landscape of Soul and Story."
Our journey focused upon mythic places and sacred sites that live prominently in the Irish landscape. Our group happened to include a large number of very gifted photographers and artists, and we traveled to exquisite places in the Boyne Valley north of Dublin, the Beara Peninsula in the scenic southwest, and the ancient town of Kildare in the midlands.
I have taught writing retreats and tours in Ireland every few years since 2002. The writers with me in 2016 included published authors, artists, novelists, poets, photographers, painters, medical doctors, healers, musicians, educators, political organizers, social workers, and international women's activists.
What emerged from this talented circle was elevated, intelligent, soulful, and finely honed. As I heard their written work and saw their photographs, I knew this would make a gorgeous book. The artist Janis O'Driscoll, who was with us, agreed to design the book, and her excellent eye and the lyrical writing sets Sacred Stone, Sacred Water apart as a singularly beautiful offering.
We explored world-famous Newgrange and ancient monasteries in the Boyne Valley and had the rare good luck to experience, the rising sun enter the 5,000-year-old passage mound at Loughcrew on the Fall equinox sunrise, which we wrote about and photographed.
In the scenic Beara Peninsula, we traveled the world-renowned Healy Pass, journeyed to venerable stone circles and ancient churches on the Ring of Beara, and explored the colorful town of Castletownbere. Finally, in Kildare we immersed ourselves in the spiritual legacy of the goddess/saint Brigit at her ancient monastic site, sacred wells, and Solas Bhríde Centre.
We were thrilled to receive many endorsements for Sacred Stone, Sacred Water, including from the beloved Irish musician Nóirín Ní Riain, the Irish ecologist and guide Gerard Clarke, and Sue Booth-Forbes, the founder of the Anam Cara Writer's Center in Eyeries, Ireland, as well as many others.
About Carolyn Brigit Flynn
Carolyn Brigit Flynn is an author and teacher dedicated to language as a pathway to renewed life and deepening of soul and spirit. As a poet and writer she infuses her work with a dedication to the earth, a love of natural and human history, and the lives of women.
As a teacher, she provides a powerful container for writers to generate new work from the depth of the soul, and to edit and complete their writing for a broad audience.
Carolyn received her B.A. from George Washington University and her M.A. from UCLA, both in Urban Studies and History. She studied the craft and soul of creative writing with the poet and novelist Deena Metzger, now her long time mentor and friend. She studied dream work in the tradition of depth psychology with Stephen Aisenstat at Pacifica Graduate Institute.
Many years ago Carolyn discovered a profound affiliation with the ancient places of Ireland. She periodically brings groups of writers and artists to journey into the soul and spirit of Ireland through writing, art and storytelling.
Carolyn's Roots In Ireland
Carolyn makes her home in California, but Ireland is the land of her ancestors, and the sacred ground of her creative and spiritual work. Her private journeys over the past 23 years feed her deep connections with Ireland’s history and lush landscape.
She has lifelong friendships with Irish guides and teachers, as well as longstanding connections with relatives in County Roscommon and County Dublin.
Carolyn first led groups of writers and artists to Ireland in 2002, with a focus on meeting creative spirits and ancient ancestors in the landscape, the carved stones, and the hills and fields.
Praise for Sacred Stone Sacred Water
Here you'll find some beautiful recommendations from other writers and artists.
“Beautifully woven in image and word, this cornucopia is surely a jewel in the crown of Tír Ghrá (pronounced teer graw - an ancient Irish phrase which means “love of land”) literature. Booklover, read aloud to taste and hear the fulsomeness, the music and richness of these deep, passionate experiences! I fully endorse this book, and every seeker of holiness, love and wholesomeness will delight in it.”
- NÓIRÍN NÍ RIAIN, Irish musician, spiritual teacher & author of Listen with the Ear of the Heart
“This delicious and thoughtful book is almost as good as going to Ireland yourself. Through the eyes of insightful women traveling together, you’ll feel as if you are with them in a stone chamber as the autumn equinox light enters it, or visiting the sacred well of Brigid, or tramping along the green, rain-soaked hills. A must-read."
- MARY DINGEE FILMORE, author of An Address in Amsterdam
“Sacred Stone, Sacred Water is a blessing, offering undeniable beauty and magic. The earth, sky, light, river and stones speak their holy language through the words and images of these wise and gifted women who made a pilgrimage to Ireland to know the Old Ones in this life.”
- DEENA METZGER, author of A Rain of Night Birds and Writing For Your Life
“A gorgeous book...From meeting modern stone diviners, to finding the hag-godess Cailleach, to tromps across wet moss to greet old stones, Sacred Stone, Sacred Water is a document of a life-altering journey. It reveals the beautiful mystery of an ancient tradition, and the power of ancestral land in sourcing what's essential now.”
- SONYA LEA, author of Wondering Who You Are

Glad to hear you got the opportunity to visit the land of your ancestors a few years back. It's always wonderful to connect with your roots. Thanks for stopping by.

My Irish family are in a small town of Ballyconneely, just outside of Clifden in Connemara...We visit a couple times a year... There is the Holy Well of the 7 sisters nearby... My cousin tells me the water is said to protect fishermen and their boats...So far it's worked well for them!

When I was much younger backpacking through Ireland I spent a day at Glendalough. To this day I still believe it was the most beautiful place I visited.
Irish American Mom
Hi Kitty - Glendalough is definitely one of Ireland's thin places. I remember going hiking in the hills over Glendalough with the hillwalking club from Trinity College. It was an amazing experience to sit high on the mountain side and look down on this beautiful valley with its two lakes. It truly is a mystical place. So happy to hear you had the opportunity to visit Ireland.

Hi Rebecca - The Beara Peninsula is one of Ireland's treasures. It is less busy than its more famous neighbor, the Ring of Kerry, but the Ring of Beara is just as spectacular. I'm so glad you got to experience it. Thanks for stopping by to support this giveaway.

I have spent most of my time in my many visits to Ireland in the County Galway, but have also traveled to Mayo and the town of Cavan. I would love your book.
Irish American Mom
Hi Susan - Galway and Mayo are beautiful counties with so many sites to see and sacred places to discover. Climbing Croagh Patrick is on my to do list, so next time I make it to the west of Ireland I'm going to bring my hiking boots. I definitely won't attempt those rocky slopes in my bare feet like many Irish pilgrims do. Thanks so much for following my recipes and ramblings.

Lynn
Thank you so much for telling us about this resource! I ordered it right away, so you can take me off the potential contest winner list. I can't wait. 🙂 This is a fascinating subject! I have a little library (among my big library) of books about Celtic spirituality, with authors such as J. Philip Newell, Esther de Waal, Tracy Balzer, and Jen Delyth. Delyth's art is beautiful and mysterious, but none of the other books have any pictures, art, or photos--although one has pretty calligraphy--so I'm really looking forward to receiving this Sacred Stone, Sacred Water book soon. EWTN had a special broadcast about the sacred wells of Saint Brigid that was wonderful to see, and I'm very glad she is so well honored centuries after her life.
I truly believe there are thin places/sacred places/veils between the mortal and spirit realms all over the world. God has no favorites, so I believe He blesses all His children with those opportunities. I've felt those stirrings most times by water, especially in remote places by the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and also in the Hoh rain forest, as well as Glacier National Park. We live in such a beautiful world, and God has blessed us with spiritual, awe-inspiring vistas in many places!
Thank you, also for the fun skip counting pages. Are you a teacher, or were you once? And thank you for the raspberry dessert recipe. It looks delicious, and I just need two more ingredients to try it, so going to the grocery store later.
You always pack your site with a good variety of items to enjoy! Please keep them coming!
Irish American Mom
Hi Lynn - Lovely to hear you too have an interest in Celtic spirituality. I must add some of the authors you mentioned to my reading list. I'm delighted this post introduced you to this lovely book. I missed the EWTN special about Saint Brigid, but perhaps they will show it again.
I agree with you that there are many thin places all over the world. Native Americans were very aware of them. I also believe that different people experience thin places in different areas. And without a doubt, water is definitely a factor in many thin places.
I have written a short book about an Irish immigrant who leaves Ireland's western shore where he loved to watch the sun setting over the Atlantic ocean. He ends up traversing the United States in search of sunsets over distant watery horizons. It may never be published formally. I sent it to an agent, who replied that she loved the book, but said there's no market for this type of writing. I might pay to get it illustrated and then self publish it. My inspiration for the book was the connection we feel to the ocean, the sun and the great awe and wonder they inspire, those important gifts of the Holy Spirit.
I am not a teacher, but when I completed my Masters in Physical Therapy I studied for a minor in Education. I'm also the mother of four, three of whom are triplets. Watching and nurturing three little ones of the same age, made me keenly aware of how children learn differently.
I hope you enjoy the raspberry cake recipe. It's not my usual fare, but my kids are growing and looking for a "greener" diet.
Thanks so much for following my recipes and ramblings, and for being such a loyal reader.
All the best,
Mairéad
Lynn
The book arrived today, and it's beautiful.
I hope you can get your book published. If you do decide to publish it yourself, I think it would sell to many on this site and elsewhere, if you choose to make it available in that way.
Wow! You're a busy person! Four children, with a set of triplets among them, a physical therapist, and a blogger. Impressive!
I always look forward to finding links to your site in my email. As busy as you are, I'm glad you decided to create your blog, and I know others are as well.
Irish American Mom
Hi Lynn - I'm delighted to hear you received your book and that you like it. I'm still editing my book, but one of these years I'll get printed. I'm delighted to hear you enjoy receiving my emails and updates about all things Irish and Irish American. Thank you for supporting this little corner of the internet and for joining in our discussions. This website wouldn't be the same, without readers like you.
Thanks for supporting this giveaway and enjoy your prize.

We’ve visited Ireland twice and I’m sorry to say we missed Newgrange. This book looks lovely and would fill in for our cancelled trip last year. Thank you.

Meg
I am so, so happy to have found your blog. I am trying to soak up as much Ireland and my Irish roots as I can. I finally got there 2 years ago when my daughter surprised me with the trip of a life time for my 50th b-day. I was able to meet cousins I never meet before and I cried probably every hour or so daily because I just couldn't believe I was there. I look forward to all that you share on here and of course may the luck of the Irish be with me for the drawing.
Irish American Mom
Hi Meg - I'm delighted you found my blog. What a wonderful gift for your 50th birthday - you must have been so happy to connect with family in Ireland. It's lovely to know you're proud of your Irish heritage. Thanks for checking out my ramblings and for exploring our cultural inheritance here in the Irish American community.
Best wishes,

Scott
I’m an archaeologist who has visited many incredible sites and places, but Newgrange is the most amazing and moving site I have been too. I can’t wait to go back!
Irish American Mom
Hi Scott - Being an archaeologist you probably found Newgrange to be ever so interesting. Loughcrew is another very interesting place. In Ireland there are many ancient monuments built in alignment to the sun at different times of the year. I find them all to be fascinating. Dolmens, cairns, and stone circles are fascinating to me. Thanks for checking out this wonderful book.
Best wishes,

I made my first trip to Ireland for a painting retreat in 2019 and can’t wait to go back! Our local host took us to some very out of the way thin spots, and they were magical. I’m excited to read more!
Irish American Mom
Hi Linda - How wonderful to have a local guide to take you to some little known mystical spots. They're all over Ireland and often only the locals know where they are. Thanks so much for following my recipes and ramblings.
All the best,
Mairéad

Love the book! What a great way to show the beauty of Ireland and share the history. The pictures are very well done! Something to be enjoyed for years to come. As I write this I am enjoying some Irish Afternoon tea; they know also how to make great tea!
Irish American Mom
Hi Angela - A cup of Irish tea is a perfect pick me up in the afternoon - it's the best tea in the world in my opinion (I am a little biased, but I know many readers here agree). This truly is a lovely book. Some of the photos I featured here are not direct copies of the ones in the book, but I chose them to illustrate the beauty of the places these writers visited on their tour. This book is an illustrated treasure of Ireland's amazing landscape. Thanks so much for following my recipes and ramblings, and for supporting our little giveaways.
All the best,

Our first trip was being planned to Ireland when Covid showed up. Hopefully in 2021 will be our lucky year. I have not heard of some of the places you mentioned, may we need to stay a little longer. Thank you
Irish American Mom
Hi Mary Jo - So sorry to hear your trip was another casualty of 2020. Hopefully we'll all be traveling again soon, and you'll make it to Ireland. When planning a trip to Ireland don't underestimate how much time you should spend there. It's a small island compared to many American states, but it has many wonderful places to visit and hidden gems to discover. Best of luck with planning your new trip.
Take care,
Mairéad
