The Quiet Man cottage is in Cong, County Mayo. It's where the iconic Irish movie of the same name was filmed.
For the third day of our Twelve Days of Christmas Irish Gift Giveaways, we have a very special prize, especially for any Maureen O'Hara or John Wayne fans.
This gift is once again brought to you by Aidan from Gifts of Ireland. It is a shout out to one of Ireland's most beloved films or movies.
And so, without further ado, let me show you our third lovely prize.
(A quick tip from Mom - Take a look at the video at the top or side of this post to see the prize in more detail plus you'll hear a lovely Irish Christmas blessing at the end.)
Day 3 Prize: Belleek Quiet Man Cottage Ornament
Have you every watched the film, The Quiet Man? It's one of Ireland's most beloved movies.
John Ford's 1952 Oscar winner is a tribute to an Ireland that no longer exists, or one that may never have existed outside of the imagination of poets and storytellers. It's a classic.
Sean Thornton, played by John Wayne, is a boxer who leaves America after accidentally killing an opponent in the ring. He returns to his native Ireland, with an eye to purchasing his family's old homestead. He wants to get away fromt the hustle and bustle of life in America and simply live in peace.
But it isn't long before he falls for Mary Kate Danaher, played by Maureen O'Hara, the fiery red head, and sister of Will Danaher, who had his eye on the Thornton property.
Will objects to the budding romance between his sister and the American, and when she marries Sean, her brother refuses to pay her dowry. Well, Mary Kate will not accept she is married until her husband claims her dowry. She wants that dowry, even if her peace loving husband has to fight for it. Sparks fly, the drama explodes, and movie history is made as the story of the Danahers and Thorntons unfolds on the screen.
By today's standards Thornton's treatment of Mary Kate may be considered politically incorrect, but it was made in a different era. No matter what, I think this film will always remain a classic.
The movie was filmed on location in Cong, County Mayo in the west of Ireland. The cottage still remains in this quaint little village, near the famous Ashford Castle hotel.
The streets of the village are beautiful, and any visitor who has seen the movie will immediately recognize where some of the scenes were shot.

“If you passed the pub as fast as you pass the Church…”
“You’re a well propertied woman, I should marry you myself”!

This is such a fun contest. Especially when I'm missing it so. I've been to the Quiet Man cottage and it is beautiful there. Every day of this contest so far is a trip to Ireland in my mind and my heart. Wish I could be there for Christmas this year but that's not meant to be. They say you never really leave a place you love. You take part of it with you and leave a part of yourself behind. I know I always leave shoes and clothes behind because I fill my suitcase with tea, crisps, biscuits, etc. lol 🙂
Irish American Mom
Hi Mary - We all cram those suitcases with Irish goodies on the way home. I think we all keep Ireland in our hearts and feel a deep connection to home. I'm so glad this giveaway series can bring a little bit of Ireland to you each day in the run up to Christmas.
All the best,

I was born an American, but I’ve always known my heart belongs to Ireland. My father was about 75% Irish, but my mother said she was German. Doing ancestral research, I found my mother’s great-grandmother was actually Irish from Dublin (and Cavan). Love my heritage!
Irish American Mom
Hi Bonnie - It's amazing how Ireland calls to us from afar. You cannot escape those Irish genes creating a deep seated connection to the land of your ancestors.
Thanks for stopping by to enter our giveaway.

I have never seen The Quiet Man before but now I'm going to make it a point to! It sounds like a really good movie. This cottage is so beautiful!
Irish American Mom
Hi Lauryn - Younger audiences find it a little dated, but I think it's a classic. It's a lighthearted look at some old Irish customs of matchmaking and dowries. It recorded our social history from that era.
Thanks so much for following my recipes and ramblings.
All the best,
Mairéad
Cathleen
Hi Mairead!
- I’ve finally figured out how to put a comment in your blog! I’ve been trying for months! Still don’t know how I git here, but that’s ok. That cottage just melts my heart- reminds me of my wonderful trip before the virus hit- we stayed in Kerry- it was an incredible experience- the people, the food, the scenery! I hope the Lord will be on my side and let me win the cottage!

Patricia
I love these giveaways... am so glad the first one led me to the Baileo online shop, where my son and I found the perfect housewarming gift for his aunt and uncle <3
I do love Quiet Man--have watched it so many times over the years. Yeah, it's politically incorrect, but an equal opportunity offender in terms of violence. When Mary Kate and Sean are courting and she goes to take yet another swing at him, Michaleen stops her with, "have the good manners not to hit the man until he's your husband, and can hit you back." A different time, indeed!
Irish American Mom
Hi Patricia - I love how you put this - "it's politically incorrect, but an equal opportunity offender in terms of violence." I believe it is what it is, and it's a reflection of life at that time in Ireland. I'm delighted to hear you're enjoying these giveaways. Lovely to hear you found the perfect gift from our first Christmas giveaway from Baileo.
Best of luck in our giveaway.
Take care,
Mairéad

Deeded
Hi. The quiet man is my most favorite movie I watch it every year. Four years ago I was so grateful to go to ireland and see where the movie was filmed, we had a drink at Pat Cohan's Bar where we met a young man who’s grandfather was an extra in the movie. We walked the streets and walked through the home of Sean and Mary Kate. The movie played in the house and I sang every song and others there joined in - beautiful memories.
Anyway, sorry to ramble. Love your blog. Sending love from California.
Irish American Mom
Hi Deedee - I really enjoyed your ramble and story about visiting Cong, where the Quiet Man was filmed. It's such a lovely place. I remember visiting relatives in Galway when I was a little girl. They lived in the railway station where the film was made. I was so in awe of the location when we visited. I'm so glad you enjoy my blog. Thanks so much for supoorting our little giveaway for Christmas.

What a delightful idea! Thank you for bringing so much information, beauty, and Irish culture for us to experience! Our whole family loves The Quiet Man. We all went to "retro" theater to see it for my daughter's birthday! You cannot believe how much more EVERYTHING it is on the big screen until you see it! Not just the larger than life actors, but the scenery!! The music as well - it is a character of its own! Thank you for offering this opportunity! Merry Christmas!
Irish American Mom
Hi there - I've never seen it on the big screen, but it must be an amazing experience. I would love to see this movie in the cinema someday. Great to hear your family love this movie so much.

The quiet man is one of our family favorites that we watch regally. But we did not know that the house was on display! Maybe one day he and I can finally take that trip to Ireland and visit the house!
Jaime Mars
Oh, I should have also stated that Maureen O'Hara was also one of our favorite Irish Actresses! We almost chose Maureen for our daughter but chose Moira

Teresa O’Dea Hein
Maureen O’Hara is iconic as the strong woman with a mind of her own and the gumption to go after what she wanted in “The Quiet Man.” My aunt, another strong-willed woman, introduced me to the beauty of Belleek. I love how this porcelain representation of the movie’s famous cottage reminds us all of the cottages that so many of our own relatives remember fondly!
Irish American Mom
Hi Teresa - It's lovely to hear so many readers remember relatives' cottages just like this one. Thatched cottages are such an important part of our past. Thanks so much for following my recipes and ramblings.
All the best,
Mairéad
Fiona
The correct answer is C - Maureen O’Hara.
Another beautiful cottage of Irish collections with sweet Irish Blessings hoping it will reach all of us in the amazing Christmas 🤶 season.
I watched several Irish movies and series but not this one. By reading this article, I am inspired to watch that movie in this lovely season.
Irish American Mom
Hi Fiona - I hope you'll enjoy this classic Irish movie. It's an oldie but definitely worth a watch. I'm so glad you're enjoying all our giveaways.
Best wishes,
Mairéad
L Huenink
My favorite movie and the answer is Maureen O’Hara. When in Ireland in 2019 my husband and I recreated the famous pose by its statue. A bus of tourists drove by as we did it and they all clapped!
Irish American Mom
How fantastic. So glad to hear you too are a fan of this wonderful old Irish movie. Thanks for reading my ramblings,
All the best,
Mairéad
Ginger
You listed three of my favorite actresses, who of course just happen to be Irish. I had to laugh when you and Sean talked about Barry’s tea. On my first two trips to Ireland I was in Co Cork, Co Clare and Co Galway. They all drink Barry’s, which I fell in love with. On my last trip we first visited Co Donegal and Co Sligo. I was so disappointed in the tea. It was Lyon’s. I had no idea that all of Ireland didn’t drink Barry’s. Boy is there a difference, and not a good one for my tastebuds. Lol
Irish American Mom
Hi Ginger - When I got married I had to convert my Donegal husband to becoming a Barry's tea fan. It's much better than other brands in my opinion, but I am biased since all my family hail from County Cork where their tea bags are made. Thanks so much for following my recipes and ramblings.
All the best,

One of the best Irish movies. It's a beautiful ornament

This little cottage ornament brings back so many memories. My husband and I honeymooned in Ireland 25 years ago, ended up in Cong, and had the absolute best day there, and best chocolate cake. We saw this cottage, from the Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, which is one of my favorite movies, watch it every year around St. Patrick's.

I am not seeing the videos you mention describing the gifts in detail.

Hi Peggy - The videos are at the top of the post. Unfortunately an ad shows before the video begins, but if you press the play triangle you should be able to see them.
Thanks for being such a loyal reader.

I was introduced to The Quiet Man in 2015 while recovering from my 19th jaw surgeries and it remains one of my absolute favourite movies.
