This gift is once again brought to you by Aidan from Gifts of Ireland. He works closely with the good folks at The Jewellery House to bring you the very best of Irish jewelry.
And so, let's take a look and learn a little bit about the symbolism of the Celtic Cross.
(A quick tip from Mom - Take a look at the video at the top or side of this post to see the prize in more detail plus you'll hear a lovely Irish Christmas blessing at the end.)
Day 6 Prize: Sterling Silver Celtic Cross Pendant
The Celtic Cross is a symbol that is closely associated with Ireland. During the early middle ages Christianity continued to spread throughout Ireland and Britain.
Celtic crosses were built by missionaries in their quest to strengthen Christianity among Celtic populations. This style of cross appealed to the Celtic people.
The design represents a fusion of Christian and Celtic motifs. This art form has come to be known as insular art (the Latin word for island is insula, so in fact this is island art.)
A Celtic cross consists of a ring around the intersection of the cross beams. The Celts used circles and spirals in their art. Early Christians in Ireland recognized a way to attract the Celtic people to the symbol of the cross. By including a circular orb around the cross they included a representation of the sun. The Celts held nature and the sun in high regard.
Many Celtic Crosses survive all over Ireland, to this very day. High crosses were erected between the 9th and 12th centuries. These stone crosses featured carved Biblical scenes over the shaft of the cross.
In the 19th century the Celtic Cross came to the fore once again. A revival of Irish heritage was under way and many chose the Celtic Cross as their headstone design. Irish cemeteries were transformed.

This lovely pendant is made from sterling silver and is part of the crafted jewelry collection from The Jewellery House, who have been designing and creating jewelry in Dublin for over 50 years.
They're collections include Celtic Cross pieces and magnificent Claddagh rings. Aidan, from Gifts of Ireland, has curated a spectacular selection of Celtic jewelery by this maker, that celebrates all things Irish.

How beautiful this pendant is. I'm in a bit of a funk. Im turning 50 in January and had planned a trip to Ireland that had to be cancelled due to all that is wrong in the world. Very disappointed. The pendant certainly wouldn't make up for missing the trip, but would offer me a small piece of Ireland. Thank you and blessings for a very merry Christmas
Irish American Mom
Hi Jill - Sorry to hear your special trip needed to be cancelled - well let's say postponed rather than cancelled. Ireland will be waiting for you, but in the meantime a necklace like this would be a perfect way to stay connected to the land of your ancestors. Thanks so much for following my recipes and ramblings.

Another beautiful Irish gift the Celtic cross. I beautiful reminder of my Faith and Heritage . Mairead , my late brother had a jewelry shop in Kildare where he made all his own Celtic jewelry. He was one of the very few people left who do this . He died from ALS two years ago at the age of 60 and is greatly missed by everyone including his loyal customers .
The cross you highlight today is beautiful and a great value
Irish American Mom
Hi Mary - I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your brother to ALS. My aunt died of ALS years ago. As a physical therapist, who works in the field of neurology, I understand how difficult ALS can be, and how it impacts people and their families. Your brother is truly missed. It would be lovely to see the skills of goldsmithing and silversmithing passed on to the next generations.
All the best,

The Celtic cross reminds me of my visit to several beautiful Irish churches and cathedrals, most noteworthy of which were at Glendalough in Co. Wicklow and St Colman's in Cobh, Co. Cork.
